The rollable phone, in which the screen rolls around, is attracting attention as a new technology that goes beyond foldable phones. LG Electronics plans to commercialize the rollable phone for the first time in the world by releasing the rollable phone introduced in the first half of this year. Chinese smartphone maker Oppo has already unveiled a similar type of rollable phone first, but with delayed commercialization, LG Electronics is expected to take the world’s first title.
LG Electronics’ rollable phone has a 6.8-inch display like a normal smartphone, but when the rolled screen is unfolded, it can be used like a small tablet PC with 7.4 inches. It is also called’Sangsomun Phone’ by adopting an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display that has a free form. The biggest advantage is that you can spread the screen wide and use it when watching YouTube, working on documents, and playing games. The main specifications are reported to be equipped with the 5th generation mobile communication (5G) application processor (AP) recently announced by Qualcomm.
Interest is also focused on whether LG Electronics’ smartphone business will rebound with the rollable phone launch. The MC division, which is in charge of LG Electronics’ mobile business, is recording losses for 23 consecutive quarters until the fourth quarter of last year. It has been making no profits for almost six years. Accordingly, some were concerned that LG Electronics would soon withdraw from the smartphone business. Recently, a new type of smartphone such as’V50′, a dual-screen phone, and’LG Wing’, a phone that rotates the screen, was ambitiously pulled out to reverse it, but it was completely ignored by the market.
Therefore, the market is evaluating the rollable phone that LG Electronics has unveiled this time as a relief pitcher and the last matchmaker for the reversal of the smartphone business. The rollable technology is seen in the market as being more versatile than the foldable commercialized earlier. It is analyzed that if LG Electronics succeeds in commercializing the world’s first rollable phone in the first half of this year and regains market interest, it will have a chance to rebound in the smartphone business. However, there are also challenges to be solved, such as improving durability by increasing technology completion and increasing sales by lowering the price of 3 million won.
