Opening of the “Pfingsthuekke” 2022 in Huckarde

Four days of hustle and bustle in the town center. Pentecost – the “Pentecost Huekke” is an inseparable part of this in the west of Dortmund. We reported live for you from the opening on Friday.

Pentecost, fair, Huckarde: They have belonged together for centuries. The merry-go-rounds have been turning again in the town center since Friday afternoon (June 3rd): It’s “Pfingsthuekke”. The official opening took place at 7 p.m. with the tapping of the keg by Deputy District Mayor Peter Spinneux, who needed two taps for the beer to flow.

Patrick Arens, representative of the showmen, spoke of a “huge relief” in an interview with our editors. He’s glad it’s starting again. “The fairs in Dortmund are among the most traditional,” he said.

The deputy district mayor Peter Spinneux said before his first tap: “I am overwhelmed that so many are back.” He is glad that some normality is returning.

Because: After a two-year break due to Corona, there is now hustle and bustle again in the town center between the market square and the Urbanuskirche. Booth after booth is lined up on Rahmer Strasse, Huckarder Strasse, Marienstrasse and Am Dieckhof. Rides such as Breakdancer, Amazonabahn, Jumpstreet, the “Pool Position” bumper car and a chain carousel promise entertainment and thrills. Several children’s carousels await the little visitors.

But that’s not all: the festival stage is on the corner of Rahmer Strasse and Dückerstrasse. The Huckarde trade association has put together a colorful musical program for the four days of the fair. After the start on Friday evening with the show band “Tommy and the Blue Boys”, the Undercover crew will rock the fairground audience on Saturday, Susan Kent on Sunday and Mike Best on Monday.

Church consecration and church court as origin

Like many traditional fairs, the Huckarder Rummel is closely linked to the church. On Whit Monday (June 6), after the service in the Urbanus congregation (beginning: 10 a.m.), a procession leads to four blessing stations in the village. Historically, it probably goes back to an annual field inspection by the Essen monastery with local farmers in the late Middle Ages.

St. Urbanus is a foundation of the Essen monastery. This church court, which dealt with the farmers’ taxes, always took place on Whit Tuesday. As in many other places, the church consecration festival was always associated with a fair – the origin of the Pfingsthuekke.

The opening day ends with a fireworks display. On Saturday and Whitsunday (June 4th/5th) the rides and booths are open from 2 p.m. to midnight, and on Whit Monday from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m.
