The anaerobic installation will have the capacity to process 30,000 tons of waste per year and will serve the municipalities of Burgas, Pomorie and Nessebar, the total budget of the project is over BGN 47 million

Burgas is once again a pioneer, not only here, but also on a European scale, after the new anaerobic installation for the processing of separately collected biodegradable waste was opened today. It is located on “Krayezerna” Street immediately after the Logistics Park and will serve three municipalities – Burgas, Pomorie and Nessebar. The official opening ceremony was attended by the Mayor Dimitar Nikolov, the Deputy Mayor of Pomorie Kuncho Gaidov, the Deputy Mayor of Nessebar Ivan Gurgov, the Chairman of the Municipal Council in Burgas Mihail Hadjiyanev, the People’s Representative and former Deputy Minister of Energy Zhecho Stankov, representatives of the European Commission and members of the Monitoring Committee of OP “Environment 2021-2027”. The installation has some of the most modern devices and systems for carrying out waste processing processes and is even better than the one given for an example in many respects is the Austrian capital Vienna, and this information was personally confirmed by Aglika Pavlova, a representative of the contractor company of the “Balkanika Biogas” project. As a result of this process, compost and methane will be produced. Electricity and thermal energy will be produced from biogas.

The anaerobic installation will have the capacity to process 30,000 tons of waste per year and will serve the municipalities of Burgas, Pomorie and Nessebar. The total budget of the project is over BGN 47 million.

The Mayor of Burgas, Dimitar Nikolov, thanked everyone who got involved on behalf of the Municipality of Burgas, the Ministry of the Environment, the contractors and made it possible for the installation to be a fact. He pointed out that the construction of the installation began at the most inopportune time possible – the beginning of the pandemic, then continued through the financial crisis, a sharp jump in the prices of construction materials, equipment and furniture.

“We had to hold on and make it happen all this complicated way. It’s already a fact. The German company kept its word and delivered extremely high-quality equipment. They are the developers of all the technology and assured us that our installation is in no way inferior to the quality of work of all their installations in Germany and will really benefit the waste and the entire ecosystem in the territory of these three municipalities. Because 30,000 tons less waste per year will be deposited in the landfill in Burgas, which means that we will reduce the volume we process there. Including, we will have the opportunity to produce biogas, and electricity from it, through the fermentation of this food waste. And if there is a need somewhere for different biogas systems, it will be delivered. So we will be very flexible in this respect”, said Dimitar Nikolov.

Each of the projects we finance is important to us, but the most important to us are the successfully implemented projects. Burgas Municipality is one of the beneficiaries, which, after the Capital Municipality, can boast of the largest number of implemented projects, sustainably functioning after that, which for us means that the Municipality understands what it means to be all together in the common fight against waste. Respect to the team of the Municipality of Burgas, said Galina Simeonova, head of the Managing Authority of OP “Environment” and chief director of the operational program.
