The Dutch handball players will not play their first group match at the European Championship in Denmark on Friday. Due to a positive corona test with opponent Serbia, the game has been moved to Saturday.
The European Handball Federation reports in one statement that one player from Serbia was tested positive on arrival in Denmark and was quarantined. The rest of the selection turned out not to be infected.
The Serbian team will be tested again on Friday and Saturday to rule out more infections. The game with the Dutch, which was scheduled to start at 8:30 PM on Friday, will now be played at the same time on Saturday.
At the European Championship it is not the case that an entire team has to go home if one or more players test positive. The infected team member must be quarantined and may not join the selection again until a negative test.
Due to the change, the Netherlands will take action two days in a row. On Sunday, the team of national coach Emmanuel Mayonnade will take on Croatia in Kolding, Denmark (6.15 pm). The other opponent in group C is Hungary and that game is scheduled for Tuesday.
The Netherlands is chasing the first European title in history in Denmark. In recent editions of the European Championship, reigning world champion Orange has already won silver (2016) and bronze (2018).
