Today, several “summer street” opening events will take place in Tērbatas Street, LETA was informed by the Public Relations Department of the Riga City Council.
The media event at the intersection of Tērbatas and Elizabetes streets will take place at 13.00. Artis Lapiņš and Aleksejs Remesovs, acting representatives of Riga Municipality, Jānis Belkovskis, Acting Director of Riga City Construction Board, Eva Juhņēviča, Member of the Board of Riga Tourism and Development Bureau, Jānis Aufmanis, Member of the Board of Riga Center Development Association and Maris Jonovs. Jēkabs Groskaufmanis, the project manager of the new development directions of “Latvijas Mobilā telefona”, will also take part in the event.
After the official opening, the wind orchestra “Auseklitis” will symbolically resound along the entire length of Tērbatas summer streets and visitors will be met by merchants.
But in the evening, at 8 pm, together with the residents of Tērbatas Street, the opening of the street will be accompanied by a “Carnival Youth” concert, followed by a music event in the newly created “Biit Me” Riga store in Tērbatas Street 15/17. In turn, Ģirts Rozentāls will play in the Vidzeme market at 7 p.m.
It has already been reported that the Riga municipality will implement the idea of a city summer street for the first time in an experiment, allocating one month to Tērbatas Street for pedestrians, cyclists, traders and on weekends – cultural events.
The status of a residential area has been determined for Tērbatas Street, said Rudīte Reveliņa, Head of the Traffic Organization and Project Management Department of the Riga City Council Traffic Department. The status of a residential area means that vehicles that will be allowed to travel on the street must do so at a speed not exceeding 20 kilometers per hour. Operational and goods delivery transport, as well as residents living on Tērbatas Street can move along the street. At the same time, the municipality invites deliveries of goods and other goods on the relevant day by 10 am.
Transport access to each street block is provided only on one side, Reveliņa emphasized, inviting to get acquainted with the traffic change scheme on the municipal website.
Also, vehicles are still allowed to cross street intersections. The representative of the Traffic Department emphasized that no one has repealed the traffic rules on the pedestrian street, therefore pedestrians are allowed to cross the intersections only at the green traffic light signal.
Public transport on Tērbatas Street will be closed for a month, and passengers are invited to use the transport that runs along Brīvības, Krišjāņa Barona, Avotu, Satekles, Valmieras and Ernesta Birznieka-Upīša streets. On the other hand, those drivers who have subscriptions for the use of municipal parking lots along Tērbatas Street will be able to park their vehicles in the parking lots on the perpendicular street.
The municipality explained that along the Tērbatas Street there are green recreation areas and expanded cafe terraces, in some places there will be an opportunity to enjoy country delicacies from Latvian home producers, but on weekends – to experience a cultural program for children and adults. In addition, free Wi-Fi will be provided throughout the street.
