Opening Doors and Extending a Helping Hand: The Inspiring Story of Camille Napoleón’s Home for Immigrants in New York

The famous phrase “where two eat, three eat” is applied in the home of Camille Napoleón, a Puerto Rican who decided to open the doors of her house to several immigrants, in the midst of the immigration crisis in New York.

Our colleague Nayeli Chávez Geller spoke with the activist, who claims that, while she was growing up, her father always told her: “My love, you are not helping, you are not living.”

Since the summer of 2022, she shares her two-bedroom home with her family and an average of 7 immigrants, who came to New York from Texas.

“You have to extend a glass of water, some clothes, a hug. This is what human beings look for and even more so when they are traveling from afar and do not know where they have entered,” said Camille Napoleon.

The immigration situation in New York

During 2023, Mayor Eric Adams and Governor Kathy Hochul have worked to house immigrants who arrived daily in New York without documentation. Gyms, schools and hotels have been converted into shelters, although capacity has been the biggest concern.

For the bad actions of some, everyone pays, says an immigrant

That is the argument used by Rafael Enríquez Freites, a young Venezuelan who has already spent a year in New York and is one of the immigrants who lives with the Puerto Rican Camille Napoleón.

“Since many (immigrants) have arrived who have not behaved well, then any Venezuelan or migrant is bad,” he told Univision.

Although he assures that he arrived without a dollar in his pocket, he has many goals that he wants to achieve. “To get ahead and help my family in Venezuela,” she said.

For her part, Camille Napoleon is clear that “this is the system”, referring to the human laws of life. She even trusts that later on, she could be the one who needs help.

“Today it was their turn and tomorrow it could be my turn,” he said.
