OpenAI Unveils ChatGPT-4o: New AI Model with Human-Like Voice Assistant Available to All Users for Free

OpenAI has released a new model that provides the same experience to all users, including those on the free version of ChatGPT, as well as an impressive voice interface that can be against Amazon’s Alexa.

In the so-called “spring update”, OpenAI presented the new ChatGPT-4o module in the first live event this Monday.

OpenAI’s director of technology, Mira Murati, told the public that the model is much faster than the previous ChatGPT-4 and shows improvements in text, video and audio.

“It’s a big step forward in terms of ease of use,” he said, showing how he could instantly translate his speech into Italian.

What else can ChatGPT-4o do?

The long-awaited event also revealed a voice mode that reads the movement of the body, the intensity of a user’s breathing, and can generate a voice with different emotional styles on demand, like a robot or singer’s voice

He also responds to comments in a human-like way, for example, when he was praised for being “helpful and great”, he replied: “Oh, stop that, you’re making me blush”.

“Talking to a computer never felt very natural to me; now it does. As we add (optional) personalization, access to information, the ability to take action from half, and more, I see an exciting future where we can use computers to do much more than ever before,” said OpenAI CEO and co-founder Sam Altman in a blog post.

The company said that, unlike previous versions, users can stop the model and it can respond in real time, reducing the time delay to 2-3 seconds.

ChatGPT is also able to detect emotions when looking at a face through the camera. During the show, they showed a smiley face and the AI ​​asked: “Do you want to tell why you’re in a good mood?”

ChatGPT is also launching a desktop application with voice and video capabilities.

Available to everyone and faster

Another big update is that the model is available on the Artificial Intelligence Application Programming Interface (API), which means that developers can start building their model at 50 percent cheaper and twice so soon

ChatGPT-4o is also available in 50 languages, covering 97% of the world’s population.

Data protection and ethics?

OpenAI did not say during the event whether it would protect user data. In previous versions, ChatGPT could use your conversations for training if you chose not to.

Generational AI has been criticized due to AI biases and hallucinations (false and false responses). The company did not mention how or if it will improve this aspect in the new model.

Currently, OpenAI is using a method called reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF), which is when people analyze biases in chatbot responses.
