OpenAI is accused of violating the privacy of millions of Americans by stealing their personal data to train ChatGPT. In this case, Microsoft, a partner of the company, is also named as a co-defendant.
Lawyers claim in the lawsuit that the two companies systematically harvested 300 billion words from the Internet, books, articles, websites and publications, including personal information obtained without consent.
The lawsuit also accuses Microsoft and OpenAI of storing, sharing and disclosing the personal data of millions of people, revealing their religious beliefs, political opinions, sexual orientations and employment history. This information has been incorporated into artificial intelligence products. Among the data collected is also personally identifiable information about Internet users, including children.
The plaintiffs are seeking $3 billion in damages for the use of this data.
