More than a hundred swimmers from a dozen different clubs participated in the I National Open Water Ranking organized by the Salvadoran Swimming Federation (Fedenat) in the Apulo Recreational Park, in Lake Ilopango.
The national tritons saw action in categories that ranged from 9-10 years (500 meters) to masters. Likewise, the event featured the participation of athletes from the Salvadoran Paraswimming Association (Adespan), who competed in mixed categories in the distances of 500 meters, 1, 3 and 5 kilometers.
The technical manager of the Fedenat, Luis Araujo, explained that the national rankings are of utmost importance for athletes, as they serve as a guide and time control.
“The objective of these competitions is to continue developing the open water modality because we have international competitions in sight. Many of the swimmers also compete in the pool, but the events here are long distance and an uncontrolled environment,” he explained.
Araujo also confirmed that this competition serves to add points for the national classification and, subsequently, will grant two places per category for the CCCAN 2024 Championship that will take place in Monterrey, Mexico, from June 9 to 30.
Among the winners of the day, the performance of Dayana Meléndez, an athlete from the Esfuerzo Gloria Program, stood out, who won first place in the 14-17 years category by completing the 5 kilometers with a time of 1:01:02.04 hours. Her sister, Alexandra, was second in the same test, with a time of 1:03:46.36 hours.

The president of Fedenat, Carmen Orellana, highlighted that the event exceeded expectations by having more participants than expected and explained the importance of holding this type of competition.
