Open VLD on Brussels kilometer charge: “If consultation fails, she will not come, Flemish commuter not extra tax”

The only question is how smoothly that consultation will go, because the Flemish government parties immediately reacted very critically to the Brussels kilometer charge yesterday. Among them also Flemish Minister of Mobility Lydia Peeters, party member of Sven Gatz. She also referred to the consultation that must now follow, but also immediately showed the limits of that consultation. “A purely unilateral levy introduced by one region to the detriment of another is not possible for me and I will continue to oppose it”.

Open VLD party chairman Egbert Lachaert joined this morning in a response to Twitter. “The proposal is now on the table. Now it is a matter of consultation”, it sounds. But Lachaert is also immediately clear that the current Brussels plan is not possible for him. “Brussels will have to demonstrate that it does not make a commuter tax without alternatives. Otherwise no go.”
