Lachaert, who is also a preformer for a federal government, said he would like to talk about the re-federalization of some powers. But that must be done to make the government apparatus more efficient. “Let’s be honest: there is still a lot of work to do in Belgium,” admitted Lachaert.
“After all the state reforms, we have an incredibly complicated state structure. It also became apparent during the COVID crisis how difficult it is to manage a crisis with our difficult structures that we have. ” Instead of fragmented powers, as in healthcare, Lachaert wants to bundle “homogeneous competence packages” under one minister.
The political homework must be done by the next elections, says Lachaert. “By 2024 we must prepare a state reform (…) that takes efficiency as the only basis,” he concluded his video message.
