The 8 parties – MR, Open VLD, PS, SP.A, Groen, Ecolo, CD&V and CDH sat together all morning to discuss a number of points for discussion. Obstacles to the start of the formation included ethical issues such as abortion, the nuclear exit and the appointment of a formateur.
The parties would now have agreed on this, so that “the next step” in government formation can be taken. At present, royal commissioner Egbert Lachaert reports to the king. A formateur would not yet be appointed, but a duo of preformateurs would be chosen. Our editorial team heard the names of Lachaert himself and PS chairman Paul Magnette. In this way, the discussion about the post of prime minister (usually the formateur or one of the formateurs) is postponed a little longer.
As far as abortion is concerned, there would be a scientific study first, after which a decision would be made “by consensus” between the parties in the government in parliament. A compromise would also have been reached on the nuclear exit.
