Open Monument Day Senate well attended

14 september 2024

Open Monument Day attracted approximately 1,300 visitors to the temporary housing of the Senate this year. The route included the plenary hall of the Senate, through the corridors and through the monumental Huis Huguetan. This year, Open Monument Day in the Senate was entirely themed around Prince’s Day.

There was an exhibition of 50 years of Prinsjesdag through the lens of photographer Hans Kouwenhoven and he himself talked about his experiences during more than fifty Prinsjesdagen. Children could make crowns and there was an opportunity to photograph yourself on the original chairs from the Ridderzaal. First Vice-Chairman Mei Li Vos welcomed the visitors and, together with staff from the Senate, she was ready to tell them everything about the building and the work of the House.

In addition, visitors could fully immerse themselves in the world of the Senate by taking a seat on the original green benches from the plenary hall of the Senate at the Binnenhof. Since the renovation of the Senate began in the summer of 2021, the benches have temporarily disappeared for restoration. Especially for Open Monument Day, they were transferred to the temporary accommodation of the Senate as a souvenir.

It was the third time that the temporary home of the Senate could be visited during Open Monument Day. The Senate moved from the Binnenhof to the Kazernestraat in the summer of 2021 in connection with the renovation of the Binnenhof in the coming years.

The current building on the Kazernestraat was built as a new building in the eighties of the last century. Huis Huguetan, the monumental part on the Lange Voorhout, was built in 1734 as a city palace for Adriënne-Marguerite Huguetan.
