Open Monument Day: music, religion and peace walk

for Sep 14, 09:24 Boxtel

Lovers of churches in particular can indulge themselves during the weekend of Open Monument Day, Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 September.

The Boxtelse Sint-Petrusbasiliek will be open on Saturday 14 September from 12:00 to 18:00, the Essche Sint-Willibrorduskerk can be visited that same day from 13:00 to 15:00 and the Sint Jans Onthoofdingkerk in Liempde will be open to the public on Sunday the 15th from 13:00 to 16:00. The Sint-Theresiakerk in Lennisheuvel can be visited a week later, on Sunday 29 September, because that is when the religious community celebrates Theresiadag.

PEACE WALK

Volunteers also welcome visitors to the Protestant church on Clarissenstraat. The peace walk that the Interreligious Platform Boxtel is holding next Saturday will arrive at the building at approximately 2:45 PM. The walk starts at 2:00 PM at the two adjacent mosques on Hoogheem. The pastoral center of the Sint-Petrusbasiliek on Oude Kerkstraat 20 is the end point of the peace walk. There will be a lecture with images and sound about pilgrimage within Christianity and Islam at 4:00 PM. There will also be live music.

The national theme of Open Monument Day is Routes, networks and connections. The interreligious excursion fits in well with that.

100TH ANNIVERSARY

In Gemonde, the Sint-Lambertus church has opened. Open Monument Day marks the start of a week of activities in the village, because of the centenary of the almshouse. Both next Saturday and Sunday, there will be an exhibition about churches in Gemonde in that striking building from 12:00 to 17:00. The organ will also be played on Sunday.

Music association Sint-Willibrordus in Esch is holding an exhibition about its 75-year history during the monument weekend. This is in the village hall De Es. It is open both days from 10:00 to 15:00. Sint-Willibrordus offers visitors a glimpse into the development of the fanfare and percussion group over the years. There are photos and films to see, but also instruments and costumes from the past to the present. There are also old documents and pieces of music to see and the anniversary book ’75 years of Klankrijk’ is available for inspection.

Finally, the historic transverse barn in the Onrooi neighbourhood can be admired on Saturday 14 September between 13:00 and 16:00. The large-scale restoration has been completed. Visitors can go to the address Onrooi 13. Owners Bart and Sanne van Gils will provide an explanation.

On Sunday 15 September, guides Els Vissers and Wilhelmien van den Biggelaar from Gastvrij Liempde will walk along monuments in their village. The excursion starts at 10:00 at the visitors’ centre D’n Liempdsen Herd on the Barrierweg. Participation is free.
