OpenAI, which introduced generative artificial intelligence (AI) ChatGPT, hired a person in charge of developing meta augmented reality (AR) devices. The development of devices that can implement chat GPT, where OpenAI has strengths, is expected to accelerate.

According to the industry and foreign media on the 5th (local time), Caitlin Kalinowski, who led the AR glass ‘Orion’ development team at Meta, announced on the 4th that she would join OpenAI on her LinkedIn account. “I’m excited to join OpenAI to lead robotics and consumer hardware,” he said in a post. “I will focus on OpenAI’s robotics work and partnerships to bring AI into the physical world to realize benefits for humanity.” He said.

Kalinowski has worked on a team developing Meta’s virtual reality (VR) devices for the past nine years. Afterwards, he led Meta’s AR glass ‘Orion’ team starting in 2022. Before joining Meta, he was a hardware expert who designed hardware for MacBooks at Apple.

Kalinowski, who joined OpenAI, is expected to focus on developing OpenAI-type devices together with CEO Jonathan Ive Loughfrom. CEO Ive is a designer who led the design of Apple’s flagship products such as the iPhone, iPod, and iPad with the full support of Steve Jobs. It is known that about 20 key personnel, including former Apple Vice President Tang Tan, who was in charge of iPhone and Apple Watch design, have also joined Love From’s hardware technology division. Kalinowski, like Ive, has something in common: he came from Apple.

OpenAI has been developing a device that can implement OpenAI’s ChatGPT in collaboration with LoveFrom since last year. According to the industry, the goal of both companies is to develop new devices that go beyond personal computers such as PCs and smartphones. This is because we believe that the full performance of ChatGPT cannot be demonstrated by simply installing it on existing devices such as smartphones.

CEO Ive, who announced in September of last year that he was developing a new hardware device in collaboration with OpenAI, elaborated on the new device, saying, “It is a product that uses AI to create a computing experience that is less socially destructive than the iPhone.”

According to foreign media outlets such as TechCrunch, OpenAI recently began hiring engineers for its research team to help OpenAI’s partners integrate multimodal AI into their hardware. OpenAI has revived the hardware research that had been halted for the development of ChatGPT after four years.
