The last Opel Insignia will leave the assembly line before the end of the year. The company’s spokesperson confirmed this in an interview with the German Automobilwoche.
–
“Discontinuing the Insignia with its non-electrified platform supports a faster ramp-up of Astra production,” he said, adding that the latest-generation Astra L, introduced in 2021, is once again being produced in Rüsselsheim.
–
The demise of the insignia follows the former Ford Mondeo rival, whose production ended at the beginning of April this year.
–
Opel has already confirmed that it is preparing a successor, which will, however, offer a purely electric drive. The question is the body type, because it is supposed to be a crossover that will not respect the traditional shapes of a sedan, liftback or station wagon. It is unclear whether it will follow the same recipe used by Stellantis for the Citroën C5 X.
–
It’s worth noting that the Vauxhall Insignia for the UK was discontinued in mid-May this year. The related Buick Regal has been missing from select markets since the middle of last year.
–
Production of the current insignia will continue until the fall. The all-new electric model is expected to arrive around the middle of the decade to help Opel in its quest to become an all-electric brand in Europe by 2028.
