Opel will be 100% electric by 2028

German carmaker Opel has said it will stop producing cars with internal combustion engines in Europe by 2028, one of the most ambitious environmental goals in the accelerating shift to electric vehicles. Electric cars with mileage up to 800 km. developed by Stellantis

Car manufacturers around the world have begun to set schedules for the phasing out of petrol and diesel cars in the face of increasingly stringent anti-pollution standards introduced to combat climate change. But among the brands that followed, only Jaguar announced a more ambitious schedule than Opel, saying it would aim to have 100% electric vehicle (EV) production by 2025.

Audi has announced plans to stop producing fossil fuel cars by 2033, while Sweden’s Volvo is aiming to do so by 2030.

Opel is owned by European carmaker Stellantis, which was born after the merger of Peugeot-Citroen and Fiat Chrysler this year. In recent years, the German carmaker has reduced its reach to focus on electric vehicles.

At a press conference yesterday, Opel CEO Michael Lochscheler said that the company plans to launch a range of electric vehicles in the Chinese market, where Stellantis has so far failed to penetrate. To renew its image, Opel will also introduce an electric version of its sports coupe from the 1970s, the Manta, to “the middle of this decade,” he said.

Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares said the group plans to invest 30 billion euros to electrify its models over the next five years. He announced plans to build a new battery plant at Fiat’s Termoli plant in southern Italy, Stellantis’ third in Europe, after those in France and Germany.

“We have reached an agreement with the Italian government to support the transformation of our engine plant in Termoli,” Tavares said. Opel introduces many new models in the next 2 years

The announcements come days before the European Commission proposes new regulations aimed at supporting the EU on its path to its carbon-neutral goal by 2050. Sources in Brussels expect the commission to announce the end of new registrations of gas stations by 2035.
