Opel Manta GSe offers a modern car in an old coat. Unfortunately not for customers

It was the Opel Manta, a coupe introduced in 1970, that inspired Opel designers to design a new front grille called the Vizor. He got a new mocha and a modernized crossland – and now also the so-called restomod of the original manta.

We have already written about a few restomodes – the word is a combination of “restaurant” and “modification” and the result is usually a historic car renovated not to its original condition, but also modernized to current standards in terms of performance, comfort and driving characteristics.

Or, as in this case, the drive. The full name of the yellow-black machine is Manta GSe ElektroMOD – it is therefore an electric car. Instead of the original in-line four-cylinder, which in the first generation of mantas could have a volume of 1.2 to 1.9 liters, the rear wheels are now driven by an electric motor with 147 horsepower. This makes him the most powerful first-generation manta ray in history – she had a maximum of 105 horses.

“Manta GSe impressively represents the enthusiasm with which we build cars at Opel. It combines tradition with today’s commitment to emission-free mobility, ”comments brand boss Michael Lohscheller.

The logo in the shape of a manta ray appears in a number of places in the car listed as a QR code.

The electric motor draws energy from a 31 kWh battery, which according to Opel should be enough for about 200 km. Charging is provided by a 9kW on-board charger, which should be able to fully charge the mantas in less than four hours. The possibility of fast charging is not mentioned in the press release.

However, he states that the car got unique 17 ”wheels, specially designed for it by Ronal, that you can play music with a built-in bluetooth speaker from Marshall and that there are new seats from Opel Adam S and two displays – one instead of the instrument panel, the second in the middle of the dashboard.

Interior modifications are somewhat debatable.

But three pedals and a four-speed manual transmission remain, so you can drive almost like in the old days. But it’s not necessary – you can rank four and only ride on it. This raises the question of whether the other three gears are real gears or whether it is an electronically controlled placebo.

But none of this has to bother us too much – Manta GSe ElektroMOD is a one-time construction that will not go into series production. On the one hand, it’s a bit of a shame, because most electric cars – let’s miss the now top and also top expensive machines like the Pininfarina Battista or the Rimac sports cars – today play an ecological and modern note and lag behind the fun behind the wheel.

On the other hand, getting something like this into production would be virtually impossible with today’s regulations so that it is sold well at the same time, and therefore not terribly loss-making.
