Opel Experimental: The Future of Individual Mobility – IAA 2021

The Risselsheim car manufacturer Opel presents a revolutionary concept – Opel Experimental. The electric crossover concept car, on display at this year’s IAA mobility event in Munich, marks Opel’s vision for the future of individual mobility. Complete aerodynamic efficiency and a spacious, illuminated interior equipped with lightweight seats and a modern projection display are just some of the key features of the Opel Experimental.

Opel CEO Florian Huettl believes that the Experimental symbolizes a new era for the brand. It is a tangible example of Opel’s innovation trajectory, showcasing design and technology elements for future models. Vice President of Design Mark Adams adds that the Experimental is a “bold and clean” interpretation of the design philosophy that will be reflected in future production cars.

The Opel Experimental departs from traditional automotive design with exterior lighting instead of chrome and bold graphics that accentuate the car’s character. Built on Stellantis’ most advanced battery electric vehicle platform, the Experimental combines aesthetics and functionality with a dramatically narrowed profile and electric all-wheel drive. Noteworthy elements such as 180-degree cameras integrated into the C-pillars and muscular wheel arches reinforce its determined appearance.

Opel’s design philosophy is expressed in the illuminated front center of the Opel Blitz, surrounded by the extended wing signature lighting and the next-generation 4D Opel Vizor advanced visibility technology. Opel Compass lights are also located at the rear, where lighting technology is combined with elegant glass transparency, creating an iconic brake light signal.

Aerodynamic solutions are cleverly used in the Experimental silhouette. It has air hatches at the front and rear for increased aerodynamic efficiency, and the car has recycled rubber tires developed with Goodyear and 3-zone Ronal rims with an active function for increased aerodynamic efficiency.

Inside, the Experimental retains D-segment capacity in a compact C-segment frame. This “space detox” is achieved thanks to weight-saving solutions such as the folding steering wheel provided by the steer-by-wire steering control system with no mechanical connection to the wheels, and the lightweight adaptive seats created using 3D mesh technology fabrics.

The philosophy of “detoxification” is continued by Pure Pad and Pure Experience. The slim Tech Bridge is an advanced projection technology display that drivers can personalize using artificial intelligence and voice control. The transparent and floating Pure Pad enhances the user experience by allowing it to be configured according to personal preferences.

Opel Experimental embodies the brand’s pillars of Detox, Modern German and Greenovation, while introducing an emotional approach to sustainable mobility. Electrochromatic fabrics provide mood lighting for passenger well-being and at the same time function as a safety feature, for example by providing a blind spot warning. This trend-setting concept car follows Opel’s tradition of presenting design studies that began in 1965 with the Experimental GT.
