Oops! King accidentally claps at opening expo

The opening was originally planned to take place on April 15, but that had to be canceled due to the outbreak of the corona pandemic. “We were overtaken by current events,” said director Amito Haarhuis in his welcome speech. The extra time was used to complete the exhibition and also draw attention to the new virus. “Now we are all deeply aware of the impact that a new infectious disease can have.”

The original design was to show how outbreaks of infectious diseases such as plague, cholera and smallpox can disrupt life and what lessons and scientific knowledge have emerged from those epidemics. This has become even clearer due to the corona crisis. Objects – such as cotton buds – that have become topical in recent months have been added to the exhibition. There is also a film about the crisis. “Infected! Is like a bridge that connects the past with the now,” said curator Mieneke te Hennepe.
