Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) Erick Thohir fully supports the follow-up on Garuda Indonesia’s legal issues by the Serious Fraud Office (SFO), aka the UK financial market crime investigation agency.
The SFO has started an investigation regarding the corruption of Bombardier and Garuda Indonesia. The agency is currently investigating allegations of bribery and corruption related to Garuda Indonesia contracts and orders.
“We at the Ministry of BUMN are very supportive of the follow-up of legal issues at Garuda because this is part of Good Corporate Governance and transparency that has been carried out since we took office,” said Erick via short message, Friday (6/11/2020).
Launching Aerotime, Garuda Indonesia is said to have operated 18 Bombardier CRJ-1000 regional jets. The deal to acquire the aircraft was finalized during the Singapore Airshow in February 2012.
At that time, the state-owned airline agreed to acquire six CRJ-1000 aircraft with an option to take delivery of an additional 12 jets. The agreement between the two parties reached US $ 1.32 billion at a selling price.
Garuda Indonesia then received delivery of the first Canadian-made regional jet in October 2012. Bombardier sent its last CRJ-1000 in December 2015.
“As this is a direct investigation, the SFO was unable to provide further comment,” said a short statement from the SFO.
Erick Thohir admitted that he would be cooperative regarding the development of the case. BUMN, he said, would coordinate with a number of stakeholders in assisting the handling of the Garuda Indonesia case.
“We will continue to coordinate with law enforcement officials in handling the Garuda case. Kumham will assist us in revising the contract through mutual legal assistance,” he said.
