Oona Ounasvuori: The Struggles of a Rising Finnish Figure Skater

Oona Ounasvuori is one of the most watched sportswomen in Finland. The twenty-five-year-old figure skater has now revealed that her life is not as simple as it may seem at first glance, according to posts on social networks.

Oona Ounasvuori’s sports career began when she was six years old, when she became a member of the Helsingin Luistelijat team, and since then she has been fully dedicated to figure skating. However, until now, he still lives with his parents because, according to him, he cannot afford to live independently.

“Figure skating is an incredibly expensive sport and I can barely afford it. I certainly never took it for granted,” says the Finnish athlete, who has more than 150,000 followers on Instagram. She claims that financing figure skating has always been difficult for her parents, and even with the increase in popularity on social networks, her economic situation has not changed much.

Even though she has millions of views on some of her videos, she still hasn’t managed to find a sponsor. Therefore, before the start of each season, he must consider whether he can continue his career. “My family and I always said that we would come up with something. It would be a shame to quit just because there is no money.”

Sponsors may also be discouraged by the fact that Oona Ounasvuori’s potential has not yet fully manifested itself in her competitive results. Although she became Nordic champion in 2022 and was able to represent Finland at the European Championships for the first time, her career was complicated by health problems.

“I managed to do a lot of things, even though I wasn’t in the best shape. I had high expectations, but then an injury came and I couldn’t train enough. I didn’t have time to recover by the start of the new season,” mentions the figure skater for the year 2022.

In the past, Oona Ounasvuori trained in Russia for a long time. However, after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine and the subsequent regulations of the Olympic Committee and the Figure Skating Federation, she could not continue to do so.

“During the last Olympic season, I trained a lot in St. Petersburg. I was there for about half of the time and I always came to Finland a week before the competition. It was a really big change, especially in terms of the amount of training,” says the sportswoman.

Last year, she was also going through a difficult time in her private life, when she broke up with the Russian-Finnish figure skater Roman Galaya after six years. He got together with her friend Anastasia Gubanová, with whom she trained in St. Petersburg.

“It was a bit of a shocking breakup for me, but I’ve come to terms with it. Now I’m mentally better than ever.” says the 25-year-old figure skater, who will miss the European Championships in January and her immediate goal is to qualify for the World Championships in March.

Oona Ounasvuori wants to use this opportunity to show her talent on the international stage.
