There are enough recovery accounts on Instagram to help people with illnesses heal. In an interview, Oona tells us how she dealt with her eating disorder and what she thinks of the accounts.

Oona shows yoga poses, motivational sayings and food pictures on her account. She herself has already overcome the disease. In her social media profile on Insta, she writes about “curing eating disorder”. Oona explains to us why she made her own illness public.

“Because I was very, very sick at the time and I always wanted someone to show me that healing is possible and who shows me that you can get well.”

However, most people associate their eating disorder with shame. According to Oona, this means that there are hardly any people in public who talk about their previous illness. “That’s why I made this account.” Oona’s own illness was more than ten years ago. She has been rid of the aftereffect for about four years. From anorexia and bolimia, Oona slipped into sports addiction and then into clean eating addiction. At the time, she couldn’t admit to herself that she still had a problem.

Is it good for me to see food?
Oona recommends that those affected get professional help in the form of nutritional therapy. She herself also went through therapy. But she also believes that recovery accounts can have a beneficial effect, as you can share your own illness with others on the Internet.
Oona uses typical recovery account hashtags to direct people on social media to their profile, but she does not explicitly refer to her own channel as a recovery account. “This account is not about me.” Her primary concern, however, is to convey what life can be like after an eating disorder. “That you can still do sports and yoga, even if you have had an eating disorder at some point.”
At the same time, it is important to Oona that people only follow their account if they can handle the content well. To do this, ask yourself whether it is really good for you to watch the food and sports posts.
