Ontario has decided to stop changing the time twice a year – provided Quebec and New York State follow suit.
A bill introduced by conservative politician Jeremy Roberts was passed in the legislature on Wednesday. The attorney general will have the discretion to enact the law if the other two governments take a similar step.
Mr. Roberts says he is delighted and will ask Quebec and New York to put an end to this “outdated practice”.
During debate on his bill, Mr Roberts cited studies indicating negative health effects and lost productivity associated with changing the clock.
Some parts of Canada have already taken action to end the daylight saving time change, including the Yukon and parts of Saskatchewan and Nunavut.
