Only vitamin D supplement necessary for children

To answer all the questions right away, only a vitamin D supplement is useful for children. In Belgium, Kind en Gezin recommends a supplement of 400 IU (international unit) or 10 micrograms of vitamin D per day until the age of 6 years. It is essential for their growth and allows them to develop strong bones and teeth by absorbing calcium from the diet.

Certain foods also contain vitamin D (such as high-fat fish, butter, margarine), but the vitamin D content in food and the possibility to absorb it are relatively limited.

Sun exposure (15 to 20 minutes a day) is an excellent daily source of vitamin D. However, in winter, weather conditions do not always allow this. Using covering clothes and sunscreen in the summer also prevents the absorption of vitamin D.
Babies should also get extra vitamin D (often via drops). Although there is vitamin D in breast milk and infant formula, these are too small amounts. And sun exposure is strongly discouraged for infants.

Any other vitamins?

For a healthy child, only a vitamin D supplement is recommended. A balanced diet is sufficient to meet the need for other vitamins and minerals.

A supplement may be of interest if there is a proven deficiency and the child is being monitored by a doctor. For example, dietary supplements may be recommended for vegetarian and vegan children. And if you think your child isn’t eating enough vegetables or fish, for example, don’t hesitate to talk to a doctor about it. Only a medical professional can advise you on this.
