Erling Haaland explodes everything. But an enemy of size can stop its series: the Covid_19.
Erling Haaland may have to miss Norway’s 2022 World Cup qualifier against Gibraltar on Wednesday due to coronavirus restrictions.
The German government is currently requiring travelers to UK soil to be quarantined on their return to the country due to the risk of the UK variant COVID-19.
As a result, Borussia Dortmund are reluctant to let their striker go to play in Gibraltar – a British territory in southern Spain. The Norwegian team, including Haaland, will meet in Marbella, Spain on Sunday for a qualifying training camp against Gibraltar on Wednesday and Turkey on Saturday.
Norway will play their qualifying game against Turkey in La Rosaleda in Malaga, Spain, due to COVID-19 restrictions in the Scandinavian nation.
Germany and Dortmund, however, do not want Haaland to cross the UK border to get to Gibraltar for this game.
Given Gibraltar is a rookie in World Cup qualifying and minnows at this level, Norway shouldn’t be forcing the issue and could just rest Haaland before the game against Turkey.
Norway end the international matches in March with a qualifying match against Montenegro in Podgorica.
As a reminder, Haaland has broken the 20-goal mark in the Bundesliga this season by scoring twice in Borussia Dortmund’s 2-2 draw with Cologne on Saturday.
The 20-year-old has now scored 21 goals in 21 Bundesliga appearances this season and is only second behind Robert Lewandowski in the Germany scorers’ table.
Away from the Bundesliga, Haaland also became the fastest player in history to score 20 Champions League goals this month. The Norwegian has scored 20 goals in 14 games in the competition, against 40 games for Lionel Messi and 56 games for Cristiano Ronaldo to reach the same benchmark. For a closer comparison, Harry Kane held the previous record, scoring 20 goals in 24 Champions League appearances.
