Cervical cancer Prevention week

This is according to figures from Olijf, a patient organization for women with gynecological cancer, in the context of the European Cervical Cancer Prevention Week.

According to RIVM, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment, 800 women in the Netherlands are diagnosed with cervical cancer every year. Approximately 200 women die each year as a result of this.

HPV infection

Cervical cancer is almost always caused by long-term infection with HPV, which affects around 80 percent of women. That is transmitted through sexual contact.

Women between 30 and 60 years old are asked to have a smear done every five years. The last time around 800,000 women responded.

In 35 of them cervical cancer was eventually found and in 5,000 women a pre-stage was found. According to an estimate, approximately 325 deaths were prevented, says Stichting Olijf.
