It was released in cinemas in January 2023, but unfortunately it was a bit lost despite the megastar ensemble. “Operation Fortune” with Jason Statham, among others, received a little more attention in the Amazon Prime Video streaming subscription. But he flies out of there in Kürte.
Jason Statham has been a crowd-pleaser for years, but that hasn’t helped “Operation Fortune” much at the box office. The spy thriller, which starred stars such as Hugh Grant, Josh Hartnett, Aubrey Plaza and Cary Elwes, among others, was ill-fated from the start – and could hardly generate any attention in the cinema. It’s a shame, because while the international press response was rather mixed, we can definitely recommend the film by cult director Guy Ritchie (“The Gentlemen”) – in the FILMSTARTS review it did better than all of the Statham actioners of the last three years.
The film has been available to stream conveniently with a Prime Video subscription since May 2024, but that will end in a few days. “Operation Fortune” is only included in your Amazon Prime Video subscription until November 5, 2024. After that, it can still be accessed on the platform, but the provider’s Prime customers also have to pay for it.
“Operation Fortune” on Amazon Prime Video*
The author of this article can only warmly recommend “Operation Fortune”, which had to be postponed last year due to its connection to Ukraine, to all fans of Guy Ritchie’s crook films, of action warrior and joker Jason Statham as well as of entertaining action jokes – and FILMSTARTS editor-in-chief Christoph Petersen was also able to gain a lot from “Operation Fortune,” which was “old school in the best sense of the word,” and its star ensemble, which performed in a great mood.
While the film is on rating platforms like MetaCritic (51 out of 100 points) and Rotten Tomatoes (51 percent positive reviews) is just about average, the conclusion of our 3.5 star review is much more positive. It says, for example, that a few years ago the film would have been considered “successful cinema entertainment”, but nothing more. But times change – and so on Today “Operation Fortune” is “something special, almost threatened with extinction – and that would be a shame when you see how much fun the cast is having and giving their audience at the same time. Old school in the best sense of the word.”
That’s what “Operation Fortune” is all about
Only when the British government really sees no other way out is Orson Fortune (Jason Statham) the man they call to help. Because the super spy always makes life particularly difficult for his contact Nathan Jasmine (Cary Elwes): Fortune suffers from claustrophobia, so that he can only go on his missions in spacious private jets – where he always has the best vintage wines, of course for purely medical purposes demanded. Of course, a lavish fee and a luxury vacation following a successfully completed assignment go without saying.
But now something has been stolen from a Ukrainian research center that is supposed to be resold for ten billion dollars – and the secret service doesn’t even know what it is! So he has no choice but to hire Fortune, who gets to work with his team. First target: the super-rich, eccentric black market dealer Gred Simmonds (Hugh Grant), who is fortunately a huge fan of Hollywood star Danny Francesco (Josh Hartnett). So the actor is quickly hired for his most challenging role to date – as a real agent.
