Only one in four pilgrims is spared blisters during the Camino de Santiago. These are the conclusions of a study carried out in León by the Official College of Podiatrists of Spain. For the sample, a total of 315 hikers of 47 different nationalities have been counted. Those patients who attended the podiatry service of the Leonese shelters and who in the last five days had walked at least 20 kilometers have been selected.
The objective of this research carried out in the hostels of León has been to evaluate the risk factors related to the appearance of dermatological lesions on the foot during hiking. The result of this study has determined that 74 percent of the pilgrims who make the Camino de Santiago suffer blisters after several stages.
Podiatrists recognize that blisters are precisely the most frequent foot ailment among all walkers, and they assure that they especially appear on the little finger. To avoid its appearance, specialists recommend avoiding wearing new footwear throughout the journey, the frequent change of wet socks, as well as the use of special anti-blisters socks.
