In recent months, the role of the University education it has been reformulated again in the country. The development of research to face the pandemic and the creation of different start-up that contribute to education have evidenced the role of the university in the advancement of society.

This function, although it has gained strength in this health crisis, is not a novelty. The political, economic and technological changes of the last decade gave universities an important role in the social and economic growth of countries. This was evidenced by a study by the National Office for Economic Research, which when analyzing universities from 78 countries found that they granted human capital, promoted innovation and that they could increase GDP by up to 4% if their presence was doubled. .

Social function and digitization

Faced with the advance of the digitization, online universities have also assumed this role and have become a new lever of progress. On the one hand, these institutions break down physical barriers, connecting students and teachers around the world. They also democratize education by providing quality training and skills for a global market to millions of students, regardless of their origin.

The International University of La Rioja (UNIR) is a clear example of this model. The institution, completely digital, has the social function as one of its pillars and represents a great possibility for thousands of students from the different regions of the country to access quality master’s degrees, degrees or specializations, with innovative and interdisciplinary methodologies.

In our country, JOIN, aligned with this principle, has also launched and fully financed social responsibility programs together with the Ministry of Education, the Municipality of Lima and UNESCO-Peru to train university teachers in digital education, promote job skills in young people and provide training digital to teachers in regions. In this way, the online university is already emerging as a promoter of development for the country and hopes to close the social gap even more.
