Online Security Act in Great Britain: Safeguarding the Digital Space

After years of consideration, the Online Security Act was finally adopted in Great Britain on October 26. It aims to make the country the “safest place in the world to be online”. The law would impose new obligations on technology companies regarding how they should design, operate and regulate their online platforms.

Specifically, this law aims to prevent underage users from accessing online pornography, limit bots, fraudulent advertising, child sexual exploitation material, the spread of terrorist content and other activities.

Although the Online Safety Act has officially gone into effect, online platforms will not have to comply with all the rules immediately. British telecommunications regulator Ofcom, which is responsible for enforcing the rules, has indicated that they will be implemented in three phases. In the first, platforms will have to respond to illegal content such as terrorism and child sexual exploitation material. On the other hand, within the framework of the second and third stages, the obligations related to the safety of children and the prevention of minors’ access to pornographic materials, the restriction of fraudulent advertisements, etc., must be observed.

Companies that fail to comply with the law can be fined up to 18 million pounds, or around $22 million, or 10% of global annual turnover.
