Upper Austria. The Upper Austria University of Education (PH OÖ) is currently offering online lectures on the subject of “Fear in times like these” by renowned experts. Participation is free. It starts today, December 10th, at 6 pm with the lecture “Jihadism – Terrorism – Political Islam” by Thomas Schmidinger.
The Covid-19 pandemic, terror, “strong” men and new media are developments that influence world events and thus directly or indirectly our lives. The online lecture series of the PH OÖ addresses and analyzes this from different perspectives.
“We are very pleased that we have again been able to attract well-known speakers for this advanced training event. Since we already had a very high demand in the first series in the spring, we decided to make these lectures available to the public again ”, says Gertrud Nachbaur, Institute Director Further Education and School Development I.
Opening lecture on jihadism, terrorism and political Islam
After the attack by a young jihadist in Vienna, there was again a lot of discussion about jihadist radicalization. Often currents of political Islam were mixed with jihadism. What makes jihadism different from other forms of political Islam? Why do young people develop into extremists and what can be done about it?
Thomas Schmidinger studied political science and social and cultural anthropology. He is a lecturer at the University of Vienna and works on topics such as political Islam, anti-Semitism and migration. For example, he spoke to jihadist prisoners in Austria and Syria.
