In addition to information about vaccinations and vaccines, the online decision aid also contains stories from others who have already gone through the decision-making process to get vaccinated. Users can use the online tool to list those matters that they consider important when making a choice for corona vaccination.
To test what they already know or not about the vaccinations, a knowledge test is also part of the online decision aid, which is available from this week on coronavaccinatie-keuzehulp.nl, built-in.
Concerns and questions about corona vaccination
It is a good sign for healthcare and society that the willingness to vaccinate against corona has increased since last year. However, many people still have concerns or questions about the choice of vaccination. These concerns, research by the RIVM showed, are partly related to the fact that people have doubts about the ‘ingredients and effect’ of the vaccines. But among this group there is also doubt about what vaccination means for their own well-being, personal values and the consequences for others.
Previous research has already shown that (online) decision aids are an effective tool to remove doubts and thus offer good support for people who still have to make a decision but are not getting it right.
Online decision aid informs and tests
With the online decision aid for corona vaccination, everyone can obtain information in a simple and accessible way. The pivot of the decision aid revolves around four important questions:
- How do I make the choice?
- What do I think is important?
- What do others think?
- How does the vaccination work?
In addition, it also answers many other questions surrounding corona and vaccination. Questions such as, ‘What is the virus?’, ‘What does the vaccination work against?’, What’s in the vaccine? ‘, As well as information about the safety of the vaccines and possible side effects.
“It is important that people can make an informed choice about corona vaccination. The decision aid, which we developed together with Radboudumc, provides users with tools to list their considerations in order to arrive at a choice. In addition, the decision aid provides a lot of information about the vaccination against the corona virus. For example, the effect of a vaccine is explained on the basis of frequently asked questions. With a knowledge test, users can test what they know about the vaccinations ”, says Pepijn van Empelen, senior researcher in the field of behavioral change at TNO.
“In addition to the need for factual information, we see that people also value the experiences of others and the motivation behind their choices. That is why the decision aid also offers a conversation module for those who have doubts. With the help of that module, the users can think of what they would like to discuss with someone else, with whom, and what that person could do for them. We hope that the decision aid with the factual information and other support offered, such as the interview module, will help people make an informed choice, ”explains Jeannine Hautvast, medical doctor Society & Health and senior researcher at Radboudumc.
