Violence and sexual exploitation of children in the online realm, or what is known as Online Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (OCSEA), is a serious threat in the current digital era.
This phenomenon describes the misuse of technology to manipulate, exploit and harm children sexually.
The following are some of the problems associated with OCSEA:
Insecurity in the Online Space.
Online spaces are relatively unsafe for children, children are vulnerable to exploitation when in online spaces without adequate supervision.
It cannot be denied that the existence of online predators who seek prey on various social platforms and chat applications increases the risk of sexual violence against children.
Anonymity and Difficulty of Identification.
We often have difficulty identifying perpetrators, because OCSEA perpetrators can hide their identities easily, making it difficult to take law enforcement action and protect victims.
This anonymity has led to an increase in the number of cases and the difficulty of tracking and prosecuting the perpetrators.
Manipulative and Extortion Tactics.
Perpetrators often use manipulative tactics, such as grooming, to gain children’s trust before exploiting them.
