OnePlus community furious about new update system

A cycle for an Oneplus beta update will look different after over-enthusiastic fans took advantage of the system.

OnePlus goes the whole way they roll updates for OxygenOS operating system. In a blog post makes the former flagship killer and coat maker known that much less beta updates will come out. It is suggested that too many ignorant fans take advantage of the beta program. The community, on the other hand, is not really happy with the development.

OnePlus criticizes beta update abuse

OnePlus will now release fewer beta updates than before. At first glance, that may sound a bit lazy, but it isn’t. The brand explains in detail why the current beta update system does not work properly.

“Our beta program was once especially popular among our tech-loving users. But now it has developed into a target group that comes from all backgrounds with different levels of technical knowledge. We also see that many users use the beta as their daily driver; for work, school or to play, which is quite remarkable. ”

In other words, far too many users use the beta branch as a sneak peek for OxygenOS. Forum users also complain that some users have yet to ask how to install the beta. Then they ask again how they should go back to the official release, without giving any feedback.

Community angry

Of course, some beta users respond with understanding, while others are angry. Criticism has been leveled at the way OnePlus usually handled a beta update. For example, a user writes that the numbering of updates was already fundamentally messy. The same updates for different markets received different denominators. This makes it more difficult for international forum users to communicate about specific updates.

At the same time, the forum is also targeting those who are ruining the entire beta update system: the “noob”. Users who have the beta branch user to already have a new version only cause problems according to these users. “They sometimes don’t even know how to file a bug report,” writes an angry fan.

New beta update format

Whatever users think of it, OnePlus wants to make the beta branch more stable and prevent less tech savvy fans from causing less trouble. OnePlus will now drop beta updates as follows:

  • Closed Beta: 2 updates per month – This unstable branch is only for elite, according to OnePlus about 100 new certified beta testers per new device. First an update was released every week, now it has halved.
  • Open Beta: 1 update per month – The first public step towards a stable version of OxygenOS. Instead of every two weeks, there is now only one update per month.
  • Official Release (OTA): unchanged, 1 update every 1-2 months – The official releases continue to be released with the same pass.

It will be interesting to see how much OxygenOS is affected by this new patch system. Fewer updates means larger updates and therefore more chance of errors. OnePlus announces that the beta program for the OnePlus 8 series will start soon. So we will know in a few months.
