OnePlus 10 Pro Review – Tweakers

In brief

The OnePlus 10 Pro is a beautiful device that has outliers up and down when it comes to functions and performance. For example, the main camera is very good, but the other cameras are substandard again. The screen scores good to very good in terms of color reproduction, but the brightness is disappointing. The powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 runs all apps and even the heaviest games smoothly, but is a hothead. In short, the OnePlus 10 Pro is not really a star, but it still comes along well with the rest. The lower introductory price of 899 euros can be decisive for choosing this device.

OnePlus has always had a special identity in smartphone land and users were happy with that. The quirky company had its own way of marketing devices and a close relationship with the community. This idiosyncratic course was endorsed by the slogan: ‘Never Settle’. You saw it everywhere, from the box to several places in the software. But things have changed in the last few years. The CEO, Carl Pei, resigned in 2020 and in 2021 the company was acquired by OPPO, a subsidiary of investment company BBK. In addition, the company had been working on a change of course for several years. The community bondaged somewhat and the way OnePlus marketed its smartphones changed. This caused resentment among the fans, but there are still enough people who buy the smartphones.

The new top model, the OnePlus 10 Pro, has been on the market in Asia for a number of months and has also been released in the Netherlands for a few weeks. The device has a new look and seems to still run on OxygenOS, albeit with more elements of OPPO’s operating system, ColorOS. In addition, the manufacturer has again entered into a partnership with Hasselblad. Despite repeated promises, the high-end devices from OnePlus never really excelled in the camera area before.

Another point that OnePlus users will pay attention to is the price. The company was always known as a manufacturer that mainly made flagship killers: smartphones that contain many high-end components, but are still very affordable. That is also something that the company has not been doing for a while and that also applies to this device. At 899 euros, the OnePlus 10 Pro is not as expensive as other high-end devices, but it is more expensive than what OnePlus users are used to. If we go by the specifications of the device, it is not a crazy price compared to other devices, but because the critical OnePlus fan is not really used to these prices, this could still work to the disadvantage of this device.

So the company has quite a bit to prove with this device. Has OnePlus managed to deliver good camera performance this time around and deliver a true flagship worth its price? And is the merging of OxygenOS and ColorOS a blessing or a curse? You can read it in this review.
