Microsoft is increasing the file size limit on OneDrive, going up from the previous 100GB a 250 GB. To announce it the same company through a post on the official blog. “We are pleased to announce that we are making it easier than ever to store, sync and share large files on Microsoft 365. Our latest improvement will help increase the file upload limit on Microsoft 365 services from 100GB to 250GB, so the same will also apply to SharePoint, Teams and OneDrive. Now you will be able to easily share large files such as a 3D model of a new building, a commercial customer shot in 8K video, a large dataset for a vaccine test or large research or video projects for educational projects “.
Microsoft explained that the change is not limited to business and school users only: anyone who uses OneDrive can now upload files of up to 250GB with no restrictions whatsoever. The company claims it has managed to increase the upload limit breaking each file into smaller chunks, and each piece is encrypted with a unique key. Furthermore, the synchronization of large files has been optimized with the help of differential synchronization, which only loads the changes made to each archived file and not the entire file each time changes are made by the user.
Support for 250GB files will roll out to first accounts by the end of January and Microsoft expects the new limit to be generally available by the end of this quarter.
