Genc Shala is a general practitioner in Heimfeld. His own corona illness made him think.
Half a year ago Genc Shala joked that he had put on a little weight. Due to the corona, the restaurants were closed, so the general practitioner, who has a practice in Hamburg-Heimfeld, had to cook himself. And that obviously tasted good. Well, in the spring of 2021, he has noticeably lost weight. “It has become different, more strenuous, more intense. You reach the limit physically,” he says. The corona pandemic challenged him – and continues to challenge him.

Hygiene concept in practice
Genc Shala had to redesign his practice in Heimfeld to meet the needs of the pandemic and organize the processes there differently. In August 2020, he had taken the corona swabs in the garden behind the practice. In the meantime, Genc Shala has rented additional practice rooms – so that the patients no longer have to go outside in the cold and so that the distance can be maintained. All employees in the practice have now been vaccinated.
A positive test
The doctor tested himself for the virus every two weeks. At the end of December, his corona test was positive, but Genc Shala remained symptom-free. The doctor had to isolate himself for ten days. It was a new experience for him. “Usually I just worked,” he says. He was used to his daily routine with office hours, house calls and night shifts on the emergency service. All of a sudden, none of this happened anymore. Suddenly he had time, it was “more relaxed and more thoughtful,” he reports.
Positive expectations
The family doctor now pays more attention to himself. Allow himself to rest, move more, go for a walk, for example. He now also wants to pay more attention to the environment. For example, he no longer buys drinks in plastic bottles, he says. He sees the future positively. If a large part of the German population is vaccinated, he believes, normal life will also return, in part and in part. “I’m very confident,” says Genc Shala. “Hope and confidence are a big part of my job.”
