Parika and Niemelä’s torment began in October 2020, when they received an email extorting money from them by threatening to leak their therapy information online. Their information was also leaked online.

In the case of Niemelä, the securing of personal data seems to have been successful. Disruptors have not called his phone number and he has not received scam messages that used his leaked information.

It has also calmed the mind.

– It comes to mind every once in a while, but not so often anymore.

However, he admits that the leaking of information caused “a little resistance to therapy”.

– I don’t feel like going a second time.

In Parika, the situation is different. Two and a half years after the blackmail message, he received a blackmail message with his social security number and an invitation to log in to the Suomi.fi website. The police investigated the case as an attempted fraud, but the investigation was stopped in the early stages.

Potential victims

Parikka and Niemelä hope that the authorities and decision-makers will learn from Vastaamo’s data breach and data leakage.

– But where are the decision-makers who would do something for the victims? asks Parikka.
