It is one more step towards the construction of the new hospital, enthuses the Executive Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer of the Ottawa Hospital, Nathalie Cadieux, in an interview with ICI Ottawa-Gatineau.
The project with an area of 2.5 million sq.2 will be located on Carling Street, near Dow’s Lake, at the foot of the Rideau Canal.
The facility will house the trauma center, a neuroscience research program and will be equipped with the most advanced digital technology so that medical staff can offer the most effective new treatments and services, says The Ottawa Hospital in a press release.
The main building, which will house the emergency room, care units and outpatient clinics, will be located at the top of the escarpment, in front of Dows Lake.

The lower part of the land will be reserved for other clinical premises, doctor’s offices, multi-storey parking, and teaching and research buildings, all of which will be connected to the nearby light rail station.
We must not forget that in addition to the clinical service, we are a research and teaching hospital. It will be at the heart of the concept, warns Ms. Cadieux.
Influenced by the pandemic
The pandemic has had an impact on the way the new Civic campus was designed, built for the next 100 years, according to the executive vice-president of the Ottawa Hospital.
So we wanted to make sure that if we have another pandemic, we will have enough flexibility to add beds, for example., she says.

The bedrooms will also be all private, which should increase the level of infection control, she adds.
Several more steps
If all goes well, work on the new health facility should begin as early as 2024.
This spring, The Ottawa Hospital has already submitted Phase 2 of the infrastructure redevelopment process to the Ontario Ministry of Health.
The cost of the project is estimated at 2.8 billion dollars. The Ministry of Health will assume 2.1 billion and the rest of the funds will come from the region, including fundraising activities, explains the Ottawa Hospital.

However, several steps still remain to be taken, in particular discussions with the provincial and federal governments, but also consultations with the communities that will be served, namely the populations of Ottawa, eastern Ontario, western Ontario. Quebec and Nunavut, in the coming months.
We will take the comments and we will make changes if the need is there, explains Ms. Cadieux.
