Vitorino Cardoso explained to the Lusa agency that the accident resulted from a collision between two heavy goods vehicles, which caused a fire in both vehicles.
The collision resulted, he added, in three injuries, two minor and one serious, who were transported to the Vila Real unit of the Hospital Center of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (CHTMAD).
The commander of Cruz Verde said that the fire in the vehicles had been brought under control, and that aftermath operations were underway.
Vitorino Cardoso specified that one of the vehicles was carrying fabrics and textile waste and the other was carrying ceramics.
According to the Douro Sub-Regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command, the accident occurred at 6:43 am, at kilometer 104 of the A4 motorway, heading towards Vila Real – Bragança, in the union of parishes of São Tomé do Castelo and Justes.
The Vila Real GNR said that, because of the collision, the A4 was cut off in the Vila Real – Bragança direction, with traffic being diverted at the Lamares junction, with the alternative being Estrada Nacional 15 (EN15).
