One Punch Man: A Hero Nobody Knows, our preview of a funny but uncertain solo mode

One Punch Man is a manga recognizable between miles. The work of ONE and Murata is completely crossed out, mocks the codes of the shōnen while using them excessively and necessarily, it forces Bandai Namco to transmit this vision through his game. No question of going on something serious like this. is the case for a Dragon Ball Z or One Piece game and we have already noticed the crazy side when we had the opportunity to try the multi mode. The idea of having random events or heroes who land after a while gave a little more gameplay and we were necessarily curious to see if we would find this touch of originality in the story mode of the game.

Play as Roulette Rider as meteors arrive. We are good in OPM!

The game where you are the hero

Our session got us started right at the very start of the game and the first big piece is character creation. The best way to test a character creation system is to make it as awful as possible, we can say that the possibilities are numerous and it is even possible to do things totally absurd, like putting a cardboard around the waist, or an accessory provided for the head at the end of the foot. Once our hideous creature is created, we realize that the pitch is quite simple in itself: we embody a class C hero who wants to climb the ranks of the association of heroes. And we will have to start with thankless tasks, namely to fight against delinquents and to resist against monsters too strong for us.

No open world this time but a HUB relatively large in which we will be able to choose our missions and other activities, buy objects but also access his apartment in the abandoned neighborhood, and the opportunity to dive back into absurd customization excessively once again. One Punch Man: A Hero Nobody Knows also features a big RPG component, with statistics to improve with points and that will define our style of play. We can therefore end up with a PV bag that hits not very hard, or on the contrary a guy like Saitama who will hit hard and be weak elsewhere, or even be a psychic like Tatsumaki. The attacks are also to be unlocked as you go and we are curious to test more how far these mechanics can go, once the game is released.

The bad feeling

We find the inherent defect in Bandai Namco games, namely lifeless cut scenes where the characters remain frozen one in front of the other by cutting their lines of dialogue and the risk that things will quickly become repetitive is never very far either. There’s a crazy and funny side to fighting thanks to the awesome universe of ONE but the whole question is whether the whole will be enough to hold the length. The game is expected to cover the entire plot of season 1 of the anime and since the release scheduled for February 28, we won’t have to wait very long to find out.
