At least three of the injured were minors who had non-critical injuries, Nashville Police said in X. The shooting occurred around 5 p.m. on a street where the TSU homecoming parade had been held that morning, Nashville Police and firefighters said at a news conference Saturday night.
The man who died was 24 years old, police said in X. His name, the names of those injured and information about the motive were not immediately released.
At least one of the injured people “is suspected of having been involved in the shooting,” Nashville Police said in X. Police did not immediately say whether they were looking for anyone in connection with the shooting.
Investigators did not immediately know if any of the people shot were TSU students, Nashville Police Commander Anthony McClain told reporters.
“We believe this was secondary to the (homecoming) celebration” and “not a direct reflection of the university itself,” McClain said.
Firefighters who were already in the area to conduct community outreach during the morning parade rushed to help the injured after the shooting, city fire department spokeswoman Kendra Loney said.
Firefighters at the scene of the shooting “said it sounded like fireworks … until they realized it wasn’t,” Loney said.
“Our staff told me a few times where they took off their belts and did things like use them as tourniquets because they didn’t have their medical bags with them,” Loney said.
The shooting “disrupted what would have otherwise been a fun and eventful day for a lot of people here today,” Loney said.
Of the 10 injured, five were taken to hospitals by fire department personnel and the others were “abandoned in private vehicles,” said Nashville Police spokeswoman Brooke Reese.
Homecoming week at the university ended this Saturday. The school’s football team played its homecoming game Saturday night at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, about 3 miles east of where the shooting occurred.
