One person injured in a fire accident in Saldus due to careless smoking In the spotlight

Due to careless smoking, two fires broke out yesterday, but one of them injured a person, Agrita Vītola, a representative of the State Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS), informed LETA.

The fire with the victim broke out in Saldus, because the SFRS received a call to the scene at 13.04, which was caused by a fire accident that broke out in the apartment of a five-storey residential house, where a sofa of two square meters burned.

Before the fire brigade arrived, the residents of the house had rescued the occupant from the smoked apartment and handed it over to the medics. Vītola pointed out that the fire had started due to careless smoking, as well as there was no smoke detector in the apartment.

A similar case, but without the victims, took place in Riga, when, due to careless smoking, a three-square-meter sofa in the apartment of a multi-storey residential building was lit. The vigilance of the residents of the house also played an important role in this fire, as they had noticed the smoke in the stairwell.

In total, the SFRS extinguished 20 fires last day, of which six fires were extinguished in Riga, three in other cities and 11 in counties.

During the day, SFRS employees performed 20 rescue operations and received 10 misleading calls.

Since the beginning of the year, 5,057 fires have been extinguished in Latvia, of which 1,379 were cases of burns, 171 people have been killed in fires, 200 have been rescued and 50 have died, including one minor, according to SFRS statistics.
