A shooting at Tuskegee University in Alabama on Sunday night left one person dead and 12 others injured.
The events took place on the weekend when graduates traditionally come to the university.
Hours later, one person was announced to have been arrested.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said Jaques Myrick, 25, of Montgomery, was taken into custody as he attempted to leave the scene of the campus shooting. A pistol with a device allowing automatic shooting was found on him.
Myrick faces federal gun charges, the agency said. The report did not specify whether he was a student at the historically black university. Authorities said the 18-year-old victim was not a student, but students were among the victims.
It is unclear whether Myrick has an attorney who could speak on his behalf.
In addition to the twelve wounded, four more people received non-gunshot injuries. Their condition is still unknown.
The FBI joined the investigation and asked eyewitnesses to share any video footage they had.
The university announced the cancellation of classes on Monday.
This is not the first time there has been a shooting on Tuskegee University campus. The Montgomery Advertiser recalled that in September 2023, as a result of a shooting in a student dormitory, two campus visitors received gunshot wounds, and two more students received injuries of a different nature. Campus officials said the incident occurred during an “unsanctioned party.”
About 3 thousand students study at the university, located 64 kilometers from the capital of Alabama, Montgomery.
In 1966, the university became the first historically black college to achieve registered national landmark status. It was also designated a National Historic Site in 1974.
