In a conversation with Latvijas Radio, Akmens said that he was not psychologically ready for the preliminaries at the World Championship and that’s why he failed, whereas in the semi-finals he had already regained his confidence and finished first in the race with a very good performance. This strengthened Akmen’s awareness that he will be ready to fight for a medal in the final.

However, Robert, the Latvian athlete, missed the podium by 0.12 seconds in the final yielding 4. place.
“It was a little short this time,” said Akmen. “There were one or two bad Irishmen in the final, which maybe prevented me from winning a medal.”
Akmen admitted that the mistakes were not big, but that they were only his own fault. If the final had gone without mistakes, the podium would not have been one step away, the kayaker admitted.
At the Paris Olympic Games, the 200-meter kayaking distance for singles will no longer be in the competition program, so Akmens focuses most of his attention on the doubles competition.
Akmens will return home after the start of the world championship on Tuesday evening.
