Senior NYPD officials and elected officials confirm that one officer has died and another is in critical condition after being shot while attending a domestic violence case.
Both NYPD officers were seriously injured by gunshots during a confrontation in Harlem on Friday night while responding to a domestic violence case, according to a senior police official.
The shooting occurred in the vicinity of West 135th Street, near Harlem Hospital. Uniforms responded to the emergency call in a case involving a mother and son.
The suspect was also shot and died at the scene.
A police source said a third police officer, relatively new to the force, shot the suspect after the two officers were struck by gunfire.
The uniformed officer said at first that the officers’ injuries were not life-threatening, but later revealed that both were in critical condition and were clinging to life while receiving medical attention at Harlem Hospital.
Some media outlets reported that both officers died in the line of duty, but Mayor Eric Adams’ spokesman Fabien Levy tweeted that information was not confirmed by the NYPD or the hospital.
