Harianjogja.com, JAKARTA – Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) can cause various signs and symptoms. The most common are fever, cough and fatigue.
Other symptoms include:
Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
Muscle ache
Chills
Sore throat
Have a cold
Headache
Chest pain
But COVID-19 can cause symptom what you might not expect, including:
1. Digestive symptoms. COVID-19 can cause nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea — either alone or with other COVID-19 symptoms. Digestive symptoms sometimes develop before fever and respiratory symptoms.
2. Loss of smell or taste. Loss of a new sense of smell or taste – without nasal congestion – is a common early symptom of COVID-19. Research shows that most changes in smell and taste often go away within 30 days. However, in some people, moderate to severe changes in smell and taste may last for 60 days or more.
3. Skin changes. The most common skin changes associated with mild to severe COVID-19 include a flat rash covered with small bumps, discolored areas on the fingers and toes (COVID toes), and itching.
4. COVID toes appear to be more common in children and young adults. Swelling or discoloration may occur in one or more toes or fingers. The hands, wrists or ankles may also be affected. Blisters, itching, rough skin, or painful bumps may occur. A small amount of pus may develop under the skin. Symptoms can last 10 to 14 days or months.
However, swollen and discolored fingers or toes can also be chilblains, an inflammatory skin condition. Chilblains develop in response to repeated exposure to cold air.
5. Severe confusion (delirium) may be the main or only symptom of COVID-19 in older people. These COVID-19 symptoms are associated with a high risk of poor outcomes, including death.
6. Eye problems. Red eyes (conjunctivitis) can be a symptom of COVID-19. Research shows that the most common eye problems associated with COVID-19 are light sensitivity, sore eyes, and itchy eyes.
Signs and symptoms of COVID-19 can appear 2 to 14 days after exposure. They can range from mild to severe. If you think you have symptoms of COVID-19, contact your healthcare provider.
