One of the most dangerous supervolcanoes in the world is active again

Its eruption in 232 AD led to a catastrophe on Earth.

Scientists from New Zealand found that the local supervolcano caldera-type Taupo is again active. Since 1979, researchers have been closely monitoring the water level in the lake of the same name, which is located in the Taupo caldera.

This is reported The Guardian.

As you know, the volcano has been active 25 times over the past 12 thousand years. Its eruption in 232 AD led to catastrophic consequences for the Earth. Taupo is considered one of the most dangerous supervolcanoes in the world.

Scientists have placed stationary research stations on beaches, rocks, piers and other places around the lake. The data confirm the movement of magma in the vent of the volcano.

By analyzing the water level in Lake Taupo, scientists can predict earthquakes and warn locals of danger in advance.

“In the lake, near the Horomatanga reefs, the volcano caused a rise of 160mm, while north of the lake, tectonic faults caused a sink of 140mm,” said Dr Finnigan Illsley-Kemp, a research fellow in volcanic geodynamics at the University of Victoria.

According to him, the activity of the Taupo volcano will increase as it approaches the next eruption. At the same time, there are no signs that this will happen in the near future.

“Volcanoes naturally move in their sleep. Earthquakes and ground movements are normal, especially for such large volcanoes. But this does not mean that it wakes up and is about to explode,” the authors of the study explained.
