In the coming days, some films worth seeing will disappear from the Amazon Prime Video program. One of them: the record classic “Ben-Hur”, which has won eleven Oscars – it couldn’t be more epic!
There are films that many film fans say: You simply have to see them. In many cases, however, this is debatable. “It doesn’t have to be anything at all,” one might think. But if you were to break down cinema history into the ultimate milestones, to the timeless classics that influenced and advanced the medium of film like few others, to award-winning record films that even modern blockbusters still have to be measured against – then “Ben Hur” belongs without a doubt also.
You can currently get “Ben Hur” with your Prime subscription at no extra cost Amazon Prime Video stream – but only until March 14, 2023. So if you still have William Wyler’s historical epic on your watch list, it’s worth keeping at least one evening free during the week to dive into the 1st century AD together with Charlton Heston.

You can expect nothing less than one of the biggest, most spectacular and most impressive action scenes in film history. But apart from the world-famous chariot racing scene, which still makes you spit more than 60 years later, the eleven Oscar-winning saga about the Jewish prince Judas Ben-Hur, who is betrayed and condemned to slavery before he takes the Way back to freedom to take revenge, still a lot of show value today.
In the past 60 years there has hardly been a film that made it so clear how much effort went into making it. The fact that not a single film has won an Oscar in more categories since then speaks volumes – and at least it doesn’t surprise the author of this article. (“Titanic” and “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” also had eleven awards)
Keep in mind, however, that “Ben Hur” will actually take up your entire evening. With a running time of 212 minutes, the film is in a league with major Hollywood epics such as “Gone with the Wind”, “Doctor Zhivago” and the “Lord of the Rings” long versions.
Also away from Amazon Prime Video soon
Also only available on Prime until March 14th is “Payback – Zahltag“ – the film thus disappears almost exactly a year after it landed on the streaming platform. It’s not quite as big a piece of cinema history as the Heston mammoth work, but with a running time of almost 100 minutes it also looks away comparatively easily – and even today it still offers gripping and, above all, merciless revenge action.
